Registration and Formalities

CHECKLIST TO REGISTER AND START BUSINESS AS SELF-EMPLOYED

To set up and start business as self-employed you have to:

  • Register with HM Revenue & Customs – for details see below Registering as self-employed.
  • Print your stationery – for details see below Business Name.
  • Apply to your local council or other public and private bodies for any permits, planning permissions and licenses your business may need – for details see below Formalities after registration.
  • Contact with your local council to establish whether you have to pay the local Business Rates – for details see below Formalities after registration.
  • If necessary, register as an employer with HM Revenue & Customs – for details see below Formalities after registration.
  • Organize your company bookkeeping and accounting – for details see below Formalities after registration.
  • If necessary, register for VAT with HM Revenue & Customs – for details see below Taxes.
